Message from Vladimiro Roca to the International Committee for Democracy
in Cuba (ICDC)

2005-10-18

Havana, Cuba
October 6, 2005

Esteemed Participants of the International Committee for Democracy in
Cuba (ICDC) Conference:

As those who are well versed on the current events of the Cuban
political situation are aware, the 26th of July saw the Cuban government
step up its repressive policies, making use of every tool in the Cuban
government's arsenal, targeting not only non-violent opposition
movements, but also the population at large, including those are self
employed as well as youths who have no involvement with so-called
political activities held and directed by state-dependent organizations.

This step, which should be considered irresponsible on the part of the
government, has served to further complicate the already strained and
tense internal situation in our country.

Furthermore, with each passing day, the danger of a violent end to the
crisis that has shaken our country to its core, leaving almost no margin
in which a peaceful negotiated solution might be found.

We firmly believe that a peaceful negotiated solution is in the hands of
all Cubans, both on the island, and in exile, as is the international
aid and solidarity offered foreign governments, international
organizations, NGOs, and internationally known figures relevant to our
call for democracy and change in Cuba, as well as freedom for our
unjustly imprisoned brothers.

I would like to take advantage of this moment, and offer my deep
gratitude for the support we received from some of the European
governments, and more so the German government, which rejected the
diplomatic blackmail of the Cuban government.

May our sincere gratitude for the solidarity shown to dissidents and
political prisoners arrive from Cuba, as well as our desires for the
success of the conference and whatever projects it may undertake.

Freedom for all political prisoners in Cuba! Cuba will soon be free and
democratic!

Vladimiro Roca

President of the Socialdemocrat Pary of Cuba.
