MIAMI --
A judge has awarded $94.6 million in damages to the family of a former
senior Havana police official whose relatives claimed in a lawsuit that
he was murdered by Cuban government agents.

Circuit Judge Robert N. Scola Jr.'s order Thursday came in the case of
Aldo Vera Sr., who died in Puerto Rico in 1976. He was a founding member
of an anti-Fidel Castro group.

A 1996 U.S. law allows victims of terrorist groups or countries like
Cuba that are designated as state sponsors of terrorism to sue for damages.

Families who have successfully sued Cuba try to recover awards from
Cuban assets frozen in U.S. bank accounts.

A jury awarded nearly $253 million last month to the children of Rafael
del Pino Siero - a former friend of Castro who died in jail.
