Oswaldo J. Payá Sardiñas, the leading representative of Christian
Democracy in Cuba
Through the closing remarks of the conference titled Quo Vadis Cuba?:
Transition after the Castro Era in Brussels, Oswaldo J. Payá Sardiñas,
the leading representative of Christian Democracy in Cuba, made a call
to focus all the efforts of Christian Democracy and the international
community to support real change in which Cubans themselves are the only
protagonists.
The conference was hosted by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the

In his message read by Ricardo Carreras, president of the NGO "Spanish
Solidarity with Cuba, " he asked for solidarity "that cannot be
postponed" "to work in supporting what we do inside of Cuba ." "If you
are in solidarity, support those campaigns."
Specifically, he was referring to "what we are doing inside of Cuba to
achieve changes" … "Will you leave here to speak about and promote
support for the Cuban Campaign Forum, the Varela Project, which are
campaigns for the rights of all Cubans and the liberation of political
prisoners?" … "Will you promote support and demand the release of these
prisoners, who lead their families in Cuba , as well as the Women in
White?" …
"The physical absence of the Christian Liberation Movement in this
conference is also due to a sustained violation that we do not tire of
denouncing: in Cuba , travel is NOT a right. For years I have been
invited to different events, and the mechanisms of the Cuban government
do not leave even fingerprints of violation, but the facts remain, and I
am not there with you. Cubans cannot enter Cuba freely or leave freely;
therefore, in our state of persecution, we will not put up a façade of
normality that some seek to force by talking about changes when there
are no rights."
